What is required of you as a research participant?
  • Attend at least one 90-minute session, held at the Riddell Center at the University of Regina. (you may attend multiple sessions if you wish)
  • Contribute a written reflection of your session experience from prompts provided 
  • An open mind and enthusiasm for trying something new.
What can you expect to do in a session?​
  • Create sounds on various repurposed materials to explore and describe their sonic properties.
  • Create expressive forms of communication using repurposed materials and unconventional uses of voice, text, gesture
  • Interact with other participants to design rhythms, pitches, unique sounds, movement or gesture, all toward exploring connections between music and sustainability
  • Improvise artistically expressive ideas with others 
  • Synthesize new learning in sound-making and sustainability, toward gaining insight into the value of material and human resources within our communities
What can you gain by participating in this research project?
  • Spark or strengthen your creativity
  • Spark or strengthen your connectivity to others through creative musical play, movement, and dialogue
  • Develop ideas for generating sustainable community-building
  • Develop creative ideas to share with your own peers, students, and communities.​

This research seeks a broad participant cohort: students, community members, educators, non-musicians, musicians, creative artists, improvisors, problem-solvers, anyone interested in collaborating through music and creativity!

This research project is funded by the Fulbright international scholarship foundation. Dr. Sarah Schmalenberger, a Fulbright Canada award recipient, is conducting the research as a visiting scholar at the University of Regina.

The project has been reviewed and received approval by the ethics board of the University of Regina, which requires participants to consent to the terms of the project activities.
​
